Raja Dr. Nazrin at Malay College Old Boys get together

The Crown Prince of Perak, Raja Muda Perak Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah was fettered by the old boys association of Malay College Kuala Kangsar at a renowned hotel in the city recently.
The old boys association of Malay College Kuala Kangsar or more popularly known by its acronym MCOBA – Malay College Old Boys Association, held a special appreciation dinner honouring The Crown Prince as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of their alma mater.
Since becoming chairman of the Lord of Governors in 2005, no event was held to commemorate the Crown Prince’s appointment.
This prompted MCOBA P-C to organise the dinner. The evening started with the serving of a nine-course Chinese dinner right after the arrival of the Crown Prince and his consort Raja Puan Besar Tuanku Zara Salim, and the recital of the ‘doa’.
While dinner was served, entertainment was provided by the ‘Suara Rasa’ trio of Kuala Lumpur who sang local perennial favourites.
To officially start the evening, MCOBA PC chairman, Ir Zamin Kamaruzaman as organiser gave his welcome speech. On behalf of all MCOBA members, he conveyed deep appreciation to His Royal Highness for doing so much for their school.
Ir Zamin also recorded MCOBA members ‘ deep respect for His Royal Highness sensitivity to issues that have affected the community.
He added that speeches and statements made by His Royal Highness are intelligent and thoughtful, and always appreciated by all.
Next to take the rostrum was MCOBA chairman, Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas who brought back nostalgia of his schooling days at MCKK.
He reminisced the hardship of the only female teacher then, who had no ladies’ toilet to go to because prior her arrival, MCKK had an all male faculty for the all boys school.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a memento from the dinner’s organiser to the Crown Prince. The gift was a framed caricature of His Royal Highness at MCKK sketched by renowned cartoonist Dato’ Lat.
The merriment continued after that with Ir. Zamin giving a rendition of rock-ballad, ‘Sampai Hati’. Sketches and more songs from MCOBA members preceded his performance.
Ir. Zamin expressed his happiness that the dinner went well as this is the first major event organised by MCOBA PC since its inception last year.
“MCOBA PC is very proud that His Royal Highness is very happy tonight. He is really happy that he delayed his flight to KL to stay until the evening is over,” said a beaming Ir Zamin.
Ir. Zamin was also happy with the turnout that evening, as there was about 300 people attending the dinner.
Acknowledging the small number of membership at MCOBA PC, Ir. Zamin said they had to strategise to fill the hotel’s banquet ballroom. That’s why they invited other MCOBA chapters and other schools’ alumni.
PerakNews.Com spoke with a former teacher of MCKK to find out why former boys of the school could stay close even when they are already senior citizens now.
The teacher, Phang Chee Kheong taught at the school from 1973 till 1987.“Its hard to pinpoint any characteristic that make them so tight knit. Maybe the juniors take example from the seniors and they look at students before them. Probably that became a tradition.
“I like the school’s students because they know how to appreciate their teachers. They might not say it aloud, but by their actions you know it. That’s why I’m here tonight, I’m fond of what MCKK stands for,” said a proud Phang of the school’s students.
